Christian Symbolism in “Voltron: Legendary Defender”
Since all stories are retelling The Story, it should not surprise viewers that there is a ton of Christian symbolism in “Voltron: Legendary Defender.” But just in case you missed it, here are a few of the ways that Voltron is telling God’s story.
“Voltron: Legendary Defender”
“Voltron: Legendary Defender” is an exciting Netflix show with lots of cool robots and adventures. This animated story is a fantastic journey of five brave pilots who come together to form a powerful robot called Voltron. But did you know that this show has some special meanings related to Christianity? It’s true!
The Good Guys
Specifically, Keith and the black lion could represent God since both are the head, literally and figuratively. When all the lions come together to form Voltron, it’s like all the parts of the body of Christ coming together to redeem the world. And this body of believers is led by the godhead: God, Jesus, and the Spirit.
The Voltron Coalition could represent God’s messengers, the angels. They chose to work with Voltron. They are helpers, even though they aren’t part of Voltron.
The planet Altea could represent Heaven or the perfection that existed in this world before sin. Altea gets destroyed, but is made new and comes back. God says He will one day make His people a New Earth where we will live. This will be our new paradise, our new “heaven.”
The Bad Guys
Emperor Zarkon could represent Satan. He used to be one of the Paladins, but he decided to become evil and started destroying the world. Satan and sin are doing the same thing to this world.
In addition, Witch Haggar represents sin because she has dark magic. Zarkon manipulated Haggar into doing evil. This is similar to how Satan manipulated Eve into bringing sin into the world.
The Galran Empire represents Satan’s army and, in some ways, Hell. Daibazaal could represent the Garden of Eden in some ways because that is where sin was created, but it got destroyed. Zarkon reigns over the new Galran Empire. He makes the people work for him, and he punishes them.
Christian Symbolism
The idea of sacrifice is important in the show. The pilots sometimes have to make tough choices and give up things they care about to protect others. In this way, Princess Allura could represent Jesus. She sacrifices herself to save the last universe. She knew that the only way to bring back the destroyed universes was by her death. Unlike Jesus, however, she does not come back to life. This reminds us of how Jesus sacrificed Himself for all of us, showing love and selflessness. What Allura does in part, Jesus does fully. He not only defeats our enemies and will restore what is lost, but He has defeated death itself!
In “Voltron: Legendary Defender,” the characters learn about trust, friendship, and doing what’s right. These are important values in Christianity, too. Christians are told to love their neighbors and treat others with kindness. We see this at work in Voltron.
Throughout the adventures in Voltron, the characters face challenges and grow stronger together. This shows us the power of teamwork and faith, which are also key elements in Christianity.
Finally, the show also teaches us about redemption, which means getting a second chance. Some characters in the show start off doing bad things but later choose to change and do good. This is like the Christian belief in forgiveness and starting anew. We are all sinners, but God can make us good.
All Stories are God’s Story
Voltron isn’t necessarily unique in this area. Many of our favorite modern movies and tv shows are unintentionally telling The Story, God’s story. We’ve already outlined how Frozen 2 tells God’s story and how Marvel’s Shang-Chi points to Jesus. And now, we’re able to see that Voltron is doing the same thing. We believe this is because God’s story, the story of His love for His people, is imprinted on our hearts, even if we want to deny it. As main characters in the greatest rescue attempt of all time, we will continue to replay the same themes and plot points that we long for.
Christian Symbolism in “Voltron: Legendary Defender”
In conclusion, “Voltron: Legendary Defender” is not only an exciting show with cool robots, but it also has Christian symbolism hidden throughout. It reminds us of important values like unity, sacrifice, forgiveness, and the love and protection of a higher power. So, as you enjoy watching Voltron, remember the special messages it carries!
