Changed for Good: A Christian Perspective of “Wicked”
When viewed from a Christian perspective, we believe Wicked can, and will, leave you changed for good. Here’s why.
A Wicked Good Show
Broadway’s Wicked is a captivating and thought-provoking musical. It explores the untold backstory of some iconic characters from The Wizard of Oz. Specifically, we peek into two of the witches: the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West. The show is loosely based on Gregory Maguire’s book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. (Which, in our humble opinion, is not worth the read.)
Christians may find the production to be a mixture of artistic brilliance and moral complexity. It will inevitably prompt reflection on various spiritual themes, some of which might end in disagreement. This is to be expected from any secularly constructed critique on forgiveness and acceptance. However, we believe that, when viewed through the Christian worldview lens, there is much to appreciate.
Wicked: A Christian Perspective
The musical’s central focus on friendship and acceptance resonates with Christian teachings. We are no strangers to loving our neighbors and embracing those who may be different, after all. Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, is portrayed with depth and compassion, showcasing the power of redemption and transformation. Her journey from a misunderstood outcast to a symbol of hope is reminiscent of the Christian belief in the transformative power of grace and forgiveness.
At the same time, Wicked delves into the theme of power and its corrupting influence. This exploration serves as a cautionary tale. It warns us of the dangers of yielding to the allure of authority without ethical guidance. And reminds Christians that we should seek to serve and uplift others instead of pursuing power for personal gain.
Wizardry in Wicked
One area of contention for some Christian viewers may be the portrayal of magic and sorcery. While Wicked presents magic as a central element, it does so within a fictional context. There is an obvious distinction between fantasy and reality. (One of the main characters is green, after all!) Christians need to discern between what is purely entertainment and what goes against their faith. It’s essential to approach the musical with discernment, keeping our faith as a guiding light.
Our personal belief is that the use of magic in such a setting is similar to the fantastical elements in Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. It is also similar to Tolkien’s use of sorcery in The Lord of the Rings. In our view, make-believe is very different than real life. We know, however, that not all Christians agree, and we’re not asking you to change your convictions. But, if you love the unintentional Christian imagery in Harry Potter, then you should have no problem with the use of “witchcraft” in Wicked.
Changed for Good
In totality, Wicked offers an opportunity to engage in conversations about ethical dilemmas, identity, and the pursuit of good in the face of adversity. This musical offers believers an opportunity to engage with others about the show’s themes in light of our faith and beliefs.
From a theatrical standpoint, Wicked is a spectacle to behold. The elaborate sets, stunning costumes, and mesmerizing performances add to the allure of the show. It is easily one of our favorite Broadway musicals!
In conclusion, Wicked on Broadway presents an imaginative and emotionally charged experience that, when contemplated from a Christian perspective, can leave viewers changed for good. Christians can appreciate the underlying themes of friendship, redemption, and the dangers of unchecked power. While the portrayal of magic might raise concerns for some, the show encourages viewers to reflect on important spiritual principles. As we engage with this musical, let us remember to approach it with discernment, seeking opportunities for meaningful conversations and introspection while keeping biblical truths as our foundation.
